Why website maintenance is necessary

Maintaining a website is far more than a cosmetic need. It is a necessary element for ensuring the functionality, security and usability of the site.

On the one hand, updates have to be carried out regularly to ensure the security of the website and to close possible vulnerabilities. Checking and maintaining the website regularly is just as crucial to make sure all links and functions work correctly. Nothing is more frustrating for a visitor than links or forms that do not work.

On the other hand, updating the content regularly allows you to keep your customers informed and to offer relevant information. That keeps interest in your website alive — and the bond with your customers grows stronger.

The benefits of website maintenance

Maintaining your website regularly brings many benefits:

  1. Better security: regular updates and security checks protect your website from hackers and other security threats.
  2. Proper functionality: continuous checking makes sure that all elements of your site — from links to contact forms — work correctly.
  3. Current content: regular updates keep your customers up to date and your website relevant.
  4. Better user experience: a well-maintained website makes visitors stay longer and more likely to become customers.
  5. Search engine optimisation (SEO): updated and well-maintained websites are rated better by search engines like Google — more visibility, more traffic.

Market overview 2023

Maintenance contracts and their cost.

A maintenance contract sets out which services the provider carries out on your website — and what that costs. The costs vary a great deal depending on scope, size and complexity of the site. Common packages can roughly be divided into five categories (monthly prices, plus VAT):

01

Low-level maintenance — approx. €10 to €20

Basic maintenance, ideal for smaller websites with less complexity: regular security updates, checking and repairing links, minor content updates.

02

Basic maintenance — approx. €30 to €45

In addition to low-level maintenance: regular updating of graphics and multimedia elements as well as basic SEO services. Ideal for mid-sized companies.

03

Medium maintenance — approx. €55 to €75

More comprehensive maintenance for larger sites with more complexity — including extended SEO services and continuous improvement of the user experience.

04

High-level maintenance — approx. €95 to €125

Ideal for companies with a complex and highly active website: advanced SEO strategies, regular reworking of the content and committed support when problems arise.

05

Premium maintenance — approx. €150 to €300

The most comprehensive maintenance service: everything in the high-level package plus advanced analysis, reports, content strategy and priority support.

Which maintenance package did I offer back then?

My maintenance package “focus on the customer” was a comprehensive service package tailored to the needs of my customers — from monitoring and analysis to looking after the content. The price was between €75.00 and €200.00 (plus VAT) and created noticeable relief and more time for the things that matter.

“The fact that the costs are capped and the work is right is a real relief and an absolute gain.”

1. Analysis, reporting and monitoring

Regular monitoring of the availability of your web applications and analysis of visitor flow. If anything is irregular you are informed immediately and advised on identifying room for improvement.

2. Administration and backups

Regular backups of files and databases, installation of relevant software updates. After every update, possible conflicts are checked — and regular scans for security gaps run on top of that.

3. Looking after text and images

Support in looking after your content, including text changes and image editing — limited to a maximum of 30 minutes per month. Plus advice on creating content relevant to your topic.

4. Technical optimisation

Optimisation of loading times and compression of files. Regular checking of the usability of your website and implementation of improvements for relevant browsers.

Conclusion

Maintaining a website is a necessary investment for any company that wants to keep up and improve its online presence. Whichever package you choose: regular maintenance is indispensable for long-term success.
